Opponents of the new campus carry laws in Texas are still voicing their concerns but the law is in effect.

New campus carry law takes effect Monday

The state’s new campus carry law takes effect in two days and the University of Texas is making sure it’s ready. Starting Monday, license holders will be allowed to carry concealed handguns at UT and other public universities.

Hundreds of signs are being stuck on the doors of UT’s high hazard labs, letting people know they’re gun-free zones. An email also went out Friday morning asking students and professors to review the new rules.

The changes are no surprise to current students and their families, but prospective students now have something new to consider as they decide where to go to school.

Summer is the season for college tours. Parents and high school juniors and seniors crisscross the UT campus armed with new questions about concealed guns and their place at the university.

“It’s scary. It’s a scary thought,” said one mother on a tour of the UT Austin campus.

The mother and daughter are visiting from Plano. They know starting Monday guns can be carried in most of the places they’re touring. Concealed guns are already allowed on the university’s sidewalks and streets. Starting Monday anyone with a license to carry can also bring them in most campus buildings.

“It must be concealed,” said gun safety expert Michael Cargill.

The owner of Central Texas Gun Works says guns will be allowed in classrooms, but in most cases they will not be allowed in dorms, university labs, day care centers and at sporting events. Professors can also make their offices gun-free zones if they tell their students and have them sign acknowledgment forms. It’s an exclusion Cargill expects to be challenged in court.
