Unity? UW ‘Multicultural Center’ segregates meetings by race after shootings

The University of Wisconsin-Madison had a strange response to last week’s race-related news.

To give students and faculty the opportunity to process and discuss the shooting of five police officers in Dallas and the deaths of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling, UW’s Multicultural Student Center held a series of meetings on Monday. Ironically, despite the fact that the meetings were described as a way for students and staff to support each other, campus officials chose to separate attendees based on race.

A Facebook post about the meetings has since been deleted, however Right Wisconsin obtained a copy of the original post that specified four different meetings were held.

“All are welcome and there will be affinity spaces for people of color and for white people,” the post said.

There were two “processing circles” held for faculty and staff. “People of color” were told to go to the second floor of the gym, while “white folks” were told to meet on the first floor. Later in the day, similar meetings were held for students. Again, students of color were told to go to the second floor of the building while white students met on the first floor.

University spokeswoman Meredith McGlone told the Wisconsin State Journal that participants wanted a safe space to “express feelings without fear of being judged,” and added that “our students of color often find such spaces hard to come by.”
