Has the student loan debate alienated those most in need?

Politico reports:

Neediest borrowers sidelined in student debt debate

The nation is having the wrong conversation about cracking existing student debt — and the presidential candidates aren’t helping. Very few people with bachelor’s degrees default on their student loans — only 4 percent of defaulters, according to federal data. But you’d never know that watching a campaign video from Hillary Clinton that features a graduate with a whopping $149,000 student loan tally, or hearing Martin O’Malley speak of his family’s $340,000 in student loans, which he alluded to again at Saturday night’s debate. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, too, regales voters with stories of his own personal struggle to pay off more than $100,000 in loans.
