Texas State University System to implement fixed-rate tuition

AUSTIN — The Texas State University System on Monday became the latest group of institutions to embrace fixed-rate tuition.

The system’s board of regents voted unanimously in favor of creating a fixed-rate tuition plan for its four-year institutions — Lamar University, Sam Houston State University, Sul Ross State University and Texas State University.

“These optional plans will assist students and their families in financial planning and will also encourage more timely graduation within the four years of fixed tuition,” said TSUS Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Perry Moore.

Two university administrators from the University of Texas System testified at a House higher education hearing last week defending the pros and cons of fixed-rate tuition.

UT-Dallas President David Daniel said the plan has helped students and parents create a more stable financial plan to pay for college. But Daniel said though he has seen an increase in four-year graduation rates since fixed tuition was implemented after he began at the university in 2005, he is unsure if there is a correlation.

Meanwhile, over at Dartmouth… tuition and fees are going up by 3.8% next year.
