Temple board announces intention to dismiss president

The board of trustees of Temple University has taken a unanimous vote of no confidence in President Neil Theobald and announced its intention to dismiss him.

The Philadelphia Inquirer (http://bit.ly/29C2XjN ) reports that the announcement came after the board’s regular Tuesday meeting.

The action comes less than a month after the removal of provost Hai-Lung Dai amid a $22 million financial aid shortfall.

Board spokesman Kevin Feeley said the decision was “largely based on Theobald’s handling of events” surrounding Dai’s removal as well as the deficit.

He said the problem was known a year ago when the deficit was $9 million but Theobald allowed it to grow rather than correcting it.

Feeley said the trustees will vote July 21 on dismissing Theobald, who has led the university for 3½ years.
