I took my first overseas job in the mid-1970s in Germany. I, and my US-based co-workers, had been raised on stories of German industry and efficiency, but in truth we had a hard time finding it. Germany’s welfare state was already well in advance of where the US was, and of where both countries are today.
We asked among ourselves “where is that great German industry and efficiency we’ve been taught?” The conclusion was inescapable – when the State guarantees your existence, there is no incentive to produce.
Such an elemental truth, observable to a 20-something just working with and moving in a socialist-oriented society. Yet, this observation goes unnoticed by many of the finest minds among us.
