Former U. Missouri Employee Admits to Embezzling Over $700,000
The University of Missouri is having a very bad year and this news certainly doesn’t help.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Former University of Missouri employee admits embezzling more than $700,000
Carla Rathmann, a former University of Missouri-Columbia employee, pleaded guilty Monday to one count each of mail fraud and credit card fraud in connection with the theft of more than $716,000 from the school over a span of nine years.
Rathmann, 54, worked as an administrative officer at Mizzou’s Southwest Research Center in Mount Vernon. Her responsibilities included receiving bills, paying bills, payroll and other accounting duties.
An audit conducted by the university suggests the theft was more widespread than what Rathmann admitted to during her guilty plea in Greene County federal court.
University investigators found that nearly $750,000 was stolen over 15 years. Rathmann worked at the university from August 2000 until September 2015.
University officials became suspicious after a newly hired supervisor found irregularities in Rathmann’s financial transactions.
The audit report says the supervisor was especially suspicious of Rathmann’s unwillingness to share financial information with him.
The investigation found that she’d used a university purchasing card for personal expenses, made unauthorized cash withdrawals, manipulated her time sheets and made payments to fake vendors.
The bulk of the thefts Rathmann admitted to came from the alleged scheme involving the fake vendors.
