American millennial joins ISIS for humanitarian reasons, leaves because it’s ‘very hard’

Defending millennials from detractors who say they’re idealistic and ignorant can be a hard business sometimes, especially in cases like Mohamad Jamal Khweis, who made the “bad decision” to join ISIS for humanitarian reasons.

Khweis surrendered to Kurdish forces in March, but was formally prosecuted on Thursday, according to The New York Times.

The 26-year-old Virginia native told the FBI that he knew ISIS wanted to destroy the United States, but he was in it to help the terrorist organization as it “engaged in peaceful and humanitarian efforts.”

During his time with ISIS, Khweis said he was trained in Mosul, Iraq and had ambitions to become a suicide bomber.
