Dear college grads, the good news is that new research suggests you are reasonably well prepared with the skills you need to land a great job and be successful in the workforce.
But there’s a few surprising skills that you have whiffed.
So says a massive survey of almost 64,000 hiring managers and over 14,000 college grads conducted by compensation software company PayScale.
A whopping 60% of managers feel critical thinking/problem solving is a skill lacking among the most recent college graduates. That’s the ability to come up with solutions to problems instead of being told what to do.

That’s pretty funny. Business Insider ranked “writing skills” as one of the top three, and then wrote “To climb the latter…” LOL!
These skills are essential but are not easily identifiable during an interview. Usually, employers will discover these after hiring. If employers discover after hiring that they have hired the wrong kind of person, it will be very expensive and time consuming to correct that mistake.
I would add: [1] teamwork and leadership skills, [2] verbal communication skills, [3] evidence of logical thinking, [4] internal focus and motivation driving career choice, [5] results orientation (“fire in the belly”). All of these I can observe or learn during an interview of a soon to be college graduate.
