LANSING — The Lansing teen convicted of murder when he was 13 years old will be allowed to attend community college classes as part of a program that could end with his release by the time he turns 21, a judge ruled today.
When Charles Lewis Jr., 19, walked into Ingham County Probate Court Judge George Economy’s courtroom for this morning’s hearing he did so with with his family, a change from past hearings on his status when he was brought into the courtroom by Ingham County deputies.
The juvenile justice specialist assigned to his case testified that Lewis continues to do well in his rehabilitation. Alexis Terry, the program coordinator at Martin Luther King Jr. Group Home in Macomb County, said Lewis has been respectful and a leader since he arrived on April 1.

Second chances are what America is all about. Personally i think that all men should have all rights restored upon full and proper completion of their sentence. To withhold voting rights or jobs or gun rights walks the slippery slope of double jeopardy. If this is not true then what incentive is there in self-improvement?
Little things, like the “lifetime ban on gun ownership” for even the accusation of the ever-widening definition of “domestic violence” is becoming a joke. How can a man’s inalienable, uninfringed right to bear arms” can be nullified for life by a lie from an angry paramour early in life?
Until and unless this former child breaks his bond, his word- he has every right to expect clemency.
How can society hold a 13yo accountable for the permanancy of adult behavior? Let him finish, release him. Give him a clear statement of the trouble he’ll face if he fails to grow up and set him free (with a little help).
