People who spray paint swastikas anywhere are the lowest of low.

Hollins removes swastika painted on landmark

The Hollins University community was disturbed to discover a swastika spray-painted on The Rock, a beloved campus landmark, early Easter morning.

University officials and students alike responded swiftly. The Hollins University Security Department said the image was first reported Sunday morning and was immediately painted over.

Later in the day, students came together to repaint the large shale rock with the message “Take Back The Rock,” framed by a colorful mix of their handprints.

The Rock, part of Hollins tradition, serves as a bright-hued campus message board greeting passers-by with messages and announcements painted on it throughout the year by members of the senior class.

In a campus-wide statement, President Nancy Gray said she was struck with “profound anger and sorrow” when she learned The Rock had been defaced with a hateful symbol.

The campus security department is investigating and will be stepping up patrols. The incident also will be reported to law enforcement.

“This was a threatening act that has no place at Hollins,” Gray wrote. “Make no mistake: We will not tolerate this or any other malicious behavior that damages our core commitments of civil discourse, social justice, and respect for others.”
