Heading to a career instead.

The Times Herald reports.

Not all high school students rushing for college

Dan Ferqueron, a representative for Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters, is someone likely to turn up at a career expo rather than a college rush.

But there he was at Port Huron High School’s media center Thursday morning, alongside recruiters from some of Michigan’s top colleges and universities.

Ferqueron’s booth was the one decorated with carpenter’s stilts, safety helmet and his own cordless drill instead of the usual college brochures, keyc hains and other freebies.

“I’m one of the guys that wasn’t college material. I say that proudly,” he said.

Port Huron and Northern high schools college advisers organized the college rush as part of a Michigan College Access Network initiative to broaden traditional ideas about post-secondary options beyond college.
