Gonzaga blocks public access to Dinesh D’Souza campus YAF event

Gonzaga University has opened plenty of political events up to the public before. But, when the speaker and host group is conservative, the same standards don’t exactly apply. YAF reported that the school has blocked public access from a Dines D’Souza event to occur Feb. 24.

The event is scheduled to go on, but only for those on campus to attend. As student activist Ben DuBois shared with YAF:

In my conversation with Director of Student Involvements… I was told that Dinesh D’Souza was allowed to speak at Gonzaga, with the stipulation that the speech is only open to Gonzaga students and faculty, and not the community. She said that this was a decision made by three people, the head of Gonzaga Campus Security, Director of Community and Public Relations, and the Dean of Students.

The Director of Community and Public Relations researched D’Souza, and “determined that Dinesh D’Souza’s beliefs are contradictory to Gonzaga’s ‘social justice’ mission and they do not want the public to question why the school brought him in. For example, he is ‘homophobic’ and ‘anti-immigration.’” YAF notes D’Souza himself is an immigrant.

The school didn’t stop there, but inserted personal opinion rather than objective truth for such a roadblock:

DuBois said the school went further, telling him “that through the research they deemed Dinesh D’Souza a ‘nasty guy’ who is ‘way out there’ and has been ‘caught in many lies in his past.’”

DuBois was also prevented from inquiring further, as he “was told the decision is final.” When given an example of another conservative who had been closed off to the public a few years prior, DuBois commented that “it’s pretty clear that only conservatives are closed to the public.”
