College student to get jail time for Yik Yak threat on SVSU campus

SAGINAW, MI — The Delta College student who posted a threatening message on a social media app will avoid prison time, but still faces the prospect of some time in jail.

Emmanuel D. Bowden appeared before Saginaw County Circuit Judge James T. Borchard on Thursday, Feb. 11, and pleaded guilty as charged to making a false report or threat of terrorism.

Bowden, 21, posted a message on Yik Yak just after midnight Nov. 13 that read, “I’m going to shoot every black person I can on campus. Starting tomorrow morning.”

After a Cobbs hearing, in which a judge considers the facts of a case and a defendant’s criminal history, Borchard indicated he would hand down a sentence of jail time instead of prison time. That was based on Bowden’s state sentencing guidelines, scored at 0 to 18 months, authorities said.
