The College Conservative – Get Ready for Executive Action on Gun Control
Sam Leanza of the College Conservative is absolutely right. Gird your loins.
Executive Action on Gun Control is Incoming
Amidst the horrible year of mass shootings in our country, some feel that the solution to this problem is “sensible gun control” that would move our troubled people ever closer to utopia. Gun control has been part of the Democratic platform for years, but now they have the emotional backing to legislate–come hell or high water. The left’s plans were brought one step closer to reality this week as Valerie Jarrett, President Obama’s Senior Advisor, revealed that “the president has asked his team to complete a proposal and submit it for his review “‘in short order.” The recommendations will apparently include measures to expand background checks, making the gun purchasing process even longer.
Back in November, a group backed by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg was working with White House attorneys to “target laws for sellers who make occasional sales versus those who are said to be engaged in the business–or rather, gun hobbyists versus gun dealers.” Essentially, this would allow the federal government to adjust the level of gun sales made by private sellers to require further background checks on any sales that surpass a set limit.
Republican leaders in Congress, Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI), and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) have not yet commented.
This policy may not stick for the majority of Americans, however. Gun sales have been on the rise over the last few weeks. On Black Friday alone, the FBI processed 185,345 background checks, a 5% uptick from Black Friday in 2014. We ought not be surprised: it’s becoming clearer to the American people that after every horrible tragedy, gun laws would likely not have prevented the loss of life.
