Months after liberal president takes over, Suffolk University tanks think tank

Just months after a liberal president took over Suffolk University, the right-leaning Beacon Hill Institute is being cut loose in what its director says is a politically motivated restriction of fundraising that chokes off its largely conservative donor base.

“There is nothing to dissuade me from thinking this is politically motivated,” said the think tank’s longtime executive director David Tuerck.

Suffolk denies any political motivation, but the decision follows a two-year campaign by the “UnKoch My Campus” student group to oust the institute for its links to the controversial Koch brothers — conservative philanthropists demonized by liberal activists — who are among the institute’s funding sources.

Tuerck, who says he will mount an effort to make the think tank “a freestanding institution,” blamed new university guidelines issued in March that “had the effect of restricting fundraising.”

But he said his research contract proposals were rejected only after former Lesley University president Margaret McKenna — a one-time civil rights lawyer in the Carter administration with ties to the Clinton administration — took over in July.
