What a lame excuse for denying Christmas.

“Safe, comfortable place”: Mizzou health center bans Christmas decorations

The atmosphere at the University of Missouri has become so toxic that holiday decorations have been banned. As MRCTV blog reported, employees at the student health center were told they would not be able to decorate this year. It was, of course, in the name of creating “a safe, comfortable place.”

MRCTV obtained a copy of the e-mail from Susan Even, executive director of the health center:

I’m aware that many of you are in the mood to decorate your areas with the holiday spirit in mind.  However, after discussing it with ET, I’ve decided that holiday decorations will not be displayed this year. Our mission is to provide a safe, comfortable place for all students to receive their health care. Without meaning to, some of the holiday symbols that we may display could contradict that mission.

As I announced last week, ET has created a new standing Committee on Diversity to help our center become more inclusive and culturally responsive.  One of their tasks will be to help us with this very issue.

I know this decision will be disappointing to some of you, but I can assure you that the kindness, warmth and compassion that you show all students is as important now as any time of the year.

Showing students “kindness, warmth and compassion” is certainly an important goal of any university office. It is laughable that in order to achieve such an aim, holiday decorations must be banned.

While Evens does acknowledge “this decision will be disappointing to some,” it is no less lamentable that the holiday cheer of employees must be silenced for the sake of students who may or may not actually be offended. Is it possible that holiday decorations could actually be to the benefit of students? No matter, for the university must protect those who may be offended.
