This is a lame response to the Liberty University president’s recent remarks about guns.

Va. debaters want HS championships moved from Liberty University

Some high school debate teams in Virginia are planning to boycott the state championships unless they’re moved from Liberty University.

Debate team coaches and students are angry over Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr.’s comments about taking up arms to stop “those Muslims.”

The debate teams at McLean High School, Lake Braddock Secondary School, Broad Run High School and Dominion High School all have student leaders who are Muslim. Several of them told WUSA9 that they would not feel welcome at Liberty because of what Falwell Jr. said.

“I wouldn’t feel comfortable as an American Muslim debater going to Liberty University and speaking my mind there in fear of a violent backlash,” Fatima Shahbaz, one of the captains on McLean High School’s team, said. Shahbaz had been planning to compete at the championships, which are scheduled to be held in April.

During a convocation at Liberty, Falwell Jr. said, “If more good people had concealed carry permits, then we could end those Muslims before they go out and kill us.”

Shahbaz says Falwell has a right to express his opinion, but he needs to understand the consequences.

“If a president, the man who represents the university as a whole holds these opinions, I can’t begin to fathom what his students believe. And what could happen to my own novice debaters if they were to come to Liberty University,” Shahbaz said. “I wouldn’t feel comfortable sending freshmen there. I wouldn’t feel comfortable sending new debaters there and having them to incur this backlash.”
