University of Phoenix: Why for-profit college is in hot water with feds

One day after the Department of Defense put the University of Phoenix on probation for alleged recruiting violations, the Justice Department and the Department of Education confirmed they are coordinating an investigation into the for-profit education giant.

Let’s talk about that:

First, more on the University of Phoenix

Based in Arizona, the University of Phoenix is the country’s largest for-profit higher education system. It operates 112 campuses worldwide and offers more than 100 degrees from the bachelor’s to the doctoral level. In 2010, the university had 600,000 students but that number had dropped to around 215,000 and in 2012, more than 100 of the university’s locations were closed.

Phoenix has one physical campus in Alabama, located in Birmingham.
