Report: Majority of Hudson Valley students unprepared for college
Are Hudson Valley students ready for college and careers?
The short answer is “No.” At least, not at the rate they should be, according to report published by the Hudson Valley Pattern for Progress Monday.
Despite a high amount of financial investment in the five years since the state made “college and career readiness” as a new metric for achievement, “there has been no improvement” and the majority of Hudson Valley students are under-prepared for college, according to the not-for-profit policy, planning, advocacy and research organization based in Newburgh.
Because of that, Jonathan Drapkin, president and CEO of Pattern for Progress, is calling for major policy changes.
“It’s a wake up call and a warning that we cannot keep going down this path if we want to have students graduating from a regional high school to have a chance at having better lives,” he said.
Statewide, student preparedness rates for high school graduates have only increased by 1 percent, or from 37 to 38 percent, according to the report.
