Phone Scam Targets College Students

APPLETON — Scammers have been contacting Wisconsin college students, claiming to be part of the U.S. government and threatening to arrest them if they don’t pay thousands of dollars, the Federal Bureau of Investigation warned Friday.

The FBI has received “multiple” calls from students at universities throughout the state and their parents complaining of the phone scam. A phone number associated with the FBI office in Wisconsin shows up on students’ caller IDs during the calls.

The threats were associated with false claims, including money owed for student loans, delinquent taxes and overdue parking tickets, according to the FBI.

The callers tried to get personal information by claiming to have specific student information.
