World War II Veteran Graduates College

Columbia, SC (WLTX) More than 1,500 people received their degrees from University of South Carolina Saturday in the summer graduation ceremony. One of them was 89 year-old, World War II Veteran, Dan Brown.

Despite being legally blind due to macular degeneration, Brown walked across the stage to shake the hand of USC president, Dr. Harris Pastides. Brown is one of 700 graduates who received their degrees from the Darla Moore School of Business.

After his service in the war, Brown attended USC in the ‘40’s on the GI Bill. He says, The GI Bill was a great thing for a lot of veterans. When I went back most of the men in the class were WWII veterans.”

But as it does sometimes, life took over and Brown was unable to finish his degree in commerce. But his dream of getting his diploma never died. Chancellor of USC’s Palmetto College, Dr. Susan Elkins says Brown contacted them to find out what it would take to finish his degree in commerce. She tells News 19, “Commerce is now economics and he only thought he was short 3 hours, but due to the changes to the curriculum over the years, He actually had enough credits and had done extremely well met all the requirements for graduation for the bachelor’s degree in economics.” It only took about a day to find that information out and at that point it was only a matter of applying for graduation. Brown says, anyone can follow his lead. He tells News 19, “It will show, regardless of what your age is, you can get a degree.”
