Bring back frat mom? University of Michigan wants it

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — House moms — or at least, live-in housing directors — could be making a comeback at the University of Michigan’s fraternities if school officials get their way.

Administrators want to see more experienced adults involved in the day-to-day life of campus Greek organizations. The hope is that having those people around would help combat behavioral issues in Greek life, which sprang into full view this past school year when U-M frat members trashed a northern Michigan resort.

The university isn’t forcing the fraternities to hire live-in housing directors but did say any new organizations coming to campus or any organizations previously disbanded that wanted to start again likely would have to commit to such a plan before the university would approve them.

Administrators spent about seven hours last week with representatives from more than 30 national Greek organizations that have chapters on the university’s main Ann Arbor campus, detailing plans and listening to suggestions. The meeting was a continuation of work the university has been doing to have a “comprehensive cultural change within Greek life” on campus, said Laura Blake Jones, dean of students.
