That’s a pretty big gift to lose.

$100M donation to Portland State University doesn’t show up

Portland State University was set to announce a $100 million donation that would have been the school’s largest gift in its nearly 70-year history, but the would-be benefactor failed to deliver.

“A prospective donor who requests to remain anonymous contacted Portland State University earlier this month about a potential $100 million gift,” PSU spokeswoman Suzanne Pardington said. “After discussions and review by PSU, the individual indicated that he wanted the gift to be announced on August 18.”

The donor told KGW Friday that he still intends to make the gift in the near future.

The school invited Gov. Kate Brown, Portland Mayor Charlie Hales and The Oregonian newspaper to attend a Tuesday news conference to disclose the anonymous contribution by a man described as a former student. But the $100 million gift still hadn’t shown up in the school’s bank account.

“As of Thursday, August 20, PSU has not received a gift from the anonymous donor,” Pardington said. “However, he remains in discussions with the university about a gift.”

The contribution would’ve been the third-largest donation ever by an Oregonian to any charity in the state, matching a 2007 gift to the University of Oregon by Nike co-founder Phil Knight and his wife.
