The study will also dig into stalking and dating violence.

University of Texas launches system-wide study on sexual assault

The University of Texas System is launching a multiyear study of sexual assault and dating violence on its campuses, including the University of Texas at El Paso.

The effort aims to understand the scope of sexual assault, dating violence, stalking and harassment at all campuses and to improve services and responses to such crimes, officials said.

“All of this information we hope is going to help inform practice, to help us determine what each campus in our system can do to support victims and (develop) prevention strategies,” said Wanda Mercer, UT System associate vice chancellor for student affairs.

The $1.7 million study will include a survey on the prevalence and rate of such violence on campuses; an in-depth, multiyear study at UT-Austin; and a two-year study on the services, training and impact of such violence at three campuses, including El Paso.

“The purpose of the survey is really to look at the culture of the campus and, for us, what can we do better?” UTEP Associate Vice President and Dean of Students Catie McCorry- Andalis said. “Any time that you can go in and assess activity, it’s a win-win for how you can improve your services.”
