Thanks to declining enrollment, University of Akron was forced to make some severe budget cuts.

University of Akron students furious over cutting of 215 positions, baseball team

AKRON, Ohio — The University of Akron announced Friday it was eliminating 215 positions and eliminating its baseball team to save $40 million in the face of declining enrollment. Earlier the school raised fees and tuition.

Predictably, the school’s community and observers had plenty to say online.

President Scott Scarborough took over the top job at the school last summer, and in May laid out a plan to rebrand the school as “Ohio’s Polytechnic University” during a speech in front of the City Club of Cleveland.

Many were agape at the juxtaposition of a fee hike and subsequent layoff, others incredulous about the lack of a baseball team to root for.

Twitter user Nate Allison wasted no time directing his ire at Scarborough. He even changed his name to #scarboroughout.
