Marshall University spending $500,000 to renovate president’s house
Marshall University is taking advantage of the fact the president’s house is currently vacant and undertaking some long-overdue renovations and upgrades.
Marshall Spokeswoman Ginny Painter said the $500,000 project will correct some structural issues and bring the home up to date. Painter said the project is being funded by the university and private donations through Marshall University Foundation Inc.
The work, she said, includes remodeling the kitchen and restrooms, painting the interior and exterior, refinishing the hardwood floors, repairing the slate floor on the front porch of the house and installing new water, sewer and gas lines from the street to the home.
Gary White of Logan is serving as Marshall’s interim president while the school searches for a successor to President Stephen Kopp who died late last year. Painter said White is renting an apartment in downtown Huntington, thus the president’s house is vacant.
The house, an elegant Colonial design, is located at 1040 13th Ave., overlooking Huntington’s historic Ritter Park. The house has long been a landmark in the city’s South Side residential neighborhood. It was built in 1923 for Charles Campbell, a prominent local attorney who served as Huntington mayor from 1919-1920.
