What a nice little surprise.

The New York Times reports:

Montclair State University Receives $20 Million, Anonymously

Montclair State University announced on Wednesday that it had received a $20 million gift from an anonymous donor, the largest in its 107-year history.

The donation will go toward programs for Montclair’s School of Business, according to Susan A. Cole, the president of the university in northern New Jersey, whose endowment was $57.2 million at the end of June 2014.

“A gift of this nature is really transformative,” she said.

Still, Dr. Cole said the university recognized that, in general, public institutions of higher education still had to catch up to private universities in terms of fund-raising. In February, Princeton University reported a donation of $300 million worth of rare books and manuscripts, the largest gift in its history.

Last month, Harvard announced its largest gift, $400 million, given by John A. Paulson to support its School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

Rutgers University, also a state institution in New Jersey, received a $40.6 million gift, split into three parts, from an anonymous donor. It was the largest single donation in a seven-and-a-half-year fund-raising campaign that ended in December.

Other factors beyond the public-private university divide come into play, said Ann E. Kaplan, director of the Voluntary Support of Education Survey for the nonprofit Council for Aid to Education.
