Nobel Prize Winner Succumbs to Anti-Free Speech Outrage, Resigns from Post
Forget this man’s stellar accomplishments, he had the gal to observe that women in science sometimes cry and have a tendency to fall in love with their male counterparts.
BBC Reports:
Sir Tim Hunt resigns from university role over girls comment
A Nobel laureate has resigned from his position as honorary professor at a UK university after he made comments about the “trouble with girls” in science.
University College London (UCL) said Sir Tim Hunt – a Royal Society fellow – had resigned from his position within its faculty of life sciences.
He told a conference that women in labs “cry” when criticised and “fall in love” with male counterparts.
He told the BBC he “did mean” the remarks but was “really sorry”.
A statement from the university read: “UCL can confirm that Sir Tim Hunt FRS has resigned from his position as honorary professor with the UCL faculty of life sciences following comments he made about women in science at the World Conference of Science Journalists on 9 June.
“UCL was the first university in England to admit women students on equal terms to men, and the university believes that this outcome is compatible with our commitment to gender equality.”
Comments
This has nothing to do with gender equality. It has everything to do with making a statement that the university doesn’t want to believe is true in the face of possibly offending feminists (some of whom can be extreme). Unfortunately, this is true of nearly any field/job, not just science. It is, in terms of the “fall in love” side of things, one of the reasons for so-called pay inequality. As for “fall in love,” may I just remind the university of the Curies?
The sexes, not genders, are equal only in marriage. Otherwise, since biology dictates abilities, we are very much unequal.
What about learning? Surely this man has a lot to teach in his discipline. That a noteworthy scholar must resign for speaking the truth…. BTW, has anybody called for Bill Bratton’s resignation yet?
Kemberlee, the word is “gall” — two ll’s. Gal refers to us both, unless you’re a guy, of course.
“He told a conference that women in labs “cry” when criticized and “fall in love” with male counterparts.”
When men and women in labs are criticized, they sometimes display emotions that are inappropriate. Men and women in labs sometimes have romances. And, people sometimes express themselves poorly. People are people, even in labs.
He spoke a very inconvenient truth that is truer than ever. Who are the Deniers again?
