Stanford: Man charged with spray painting swastikas on student residences
PALO ALTO — A 19-year-old man was arraigned Thursday in connection with the spray painting of swastikas and other graffiti on two student residences at Stanford University earlier this year.
Lucas Joseph Ninow is facing one count each of felony vandalism, misdemeanor vandalism and misdemeanor hate crime, according to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office.
Ninow, who is not a student at Stanford, was arrested in Mountain View on Wednesday, the university said in a news release.
Gold spray-painted swastikas were discovered April 26 on Sigma Alpha Epsilon, a fraternity at 1047 Campus Drive, and a pentagram was found at La Casa Italiana, a residence dedicated to the study and celebration of Italian culture and language at 562 Mayfield Ave.
Neither of the student residences exclusively houses Jewish students, according to a spokesman for the university’s Department of Public Safety.
“This level of incivility has no place at Stanford,” President John Hennessey wrote in a statement condemning the vandalism shortly after it was discovered.
