Gov. Jindal signs bills into law supporting higher education for veterans

Governor Bobby Jindal signed two bills into law on Friday aimed at helping military veterans and their spouses complete their education.

SB 132, introduced by Sen. Ben Nevers, and HB 485, by Rep. Henry Burns, will assist the more than two million Louisiana veterans in receiving higher education through online, on-campus, and on-base opportunities offered by colleges and universities nationwide.

SB 132 will help veterans by allowing class credits to be transferred more easily to Louisiana schools. A higher priority will be placed on evaluating military personnel transcripts, and will allow state schools to award college credit for training and experience gained during military service.

“This bill ensures that our vets can receive credit for all of the work they have accomplished while in the military and speed up their path to achieving higher education in our state,” says Sen. Ben Nevers.

HB 485 will assist veterans by highlighting campuses who create a supportive environment for veteran and military students. These universities will be given a special “Military and Veterans’ Friendly Campus” designation.

Some of the criteria for receiving the designation include specialized orientation sessions, application fee waivers, re-admission policies after return from deployment, priority class scheduling, veteran-specific courses, career workshops, and adoption of the veterans articulation transfer process.

“This legislation supports these men and women by encouraging our universities to offer specialized support services to our veterans who are preparing to enter a competitive workforce in the near future,” says Rep. Henry Burns.
