Bryan Torres came to the United States from El Salvador nine years ago but because he has only a work permit, he was unable to receive financial aid to attend the University of Massachusetts.
Nor could the Northampton resident pay the in-state tuition rate.
On Friday, Torres, an Amherst College student, and others from the college, as well as Hampshire, Holyoke Community, Mount Holyoke and Smith colleges will be marching to call attention to their plight.
Called “Out of the Shadows March” the students will begin at Amherst College and end up at the financial aid office at the Whitmore Administration Building at UMass.
“We are in shadow a lot,” Torres said.
The group is asking for the ability to obtain financial aid and the option of paying in-state tuition at public institutions. They are also asking for the passing of The Trust Act and a halt to statewide collaboration with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
