The texts may have been vile but aren’t they protected by free speech? Also, they were just texting each other.

Washburn University frat suspended after ‘sexually vulgar’ texts between members surface

A Washburn University fraternity has been suspended by its national leadership after sexually vulgar text messages between its members were discovered.

The Phi Delta Theta International said early Thursday it suspended the Washburn chapter as it investigates the messages.

Jake Gregg, the president of Washburn’s Phi Delta Theta chapter, is apologizing.

“I don’t think that anyone in our fraternity honestly feels in a way that would reflect the things that were said in those messages,” Gregg said.

He found out about the messages after they were leaked to a local newspaper and to students on campus.

What was in the ‘inappropriate’ texts?

According to the Topeka Capital Journal , the group texts were mostly about women.

One person commented, “Women are equal and deserve respect … just kidding they should (expletive).”

Another insinuated a 12-year-old girl is old enough for sex.

“They were absolutely, intolerably disgusting,” said Jerry Farley, the president of the university.

What could happen to the students who sent the texts?

Farley said he plans to implement disciplinary action once the students involved are identified.

Is it possible the students involved could be kicked out of school or possibly be prosecuted? Not likely, according to Doug Bonney, legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas City.
