LGBT Activists Want GW Conservative Org Deemed A Hate Group

George Washington University’s Allied in Pride, a gay rights student group, wants GW’s Young America’s Foundation labeled a hate group after the conservative group said it would request an exemption from mandatory LGBT sensitivity training due to the religious beliefs of some members.

Last month, the GW Student Association voted for a series of pro-LGBT measures, including adding a gender-neutral option for all office forms and mandatory sensitivity training for all student orgs. The GW chapter of YAF says that if the measures pass, they will submit a request for exemption, citing religious beliefs and pushing back against the notion of mandatory training for all students involved.

“Mandated training is not really being tolerant of all religious beliefs,” said GW YAF president Emily Jashinsky. “The way people who are deeply Christian behave is for a reason, and if you’re training them to change that behavior, there’s obviously a problem with that.”

Jashinsky explained that YAF does not discriminate according to sexual orientation, but noted that respect for members’ religious beliefs is a key principle of the group.

GW Allied in Pride responded to YAF’s position on Facebook by calling for the organization to be deemed a hate group by the administration and have all funding withdrawn:

If GW YAF refuses to participate in safe zone trainings that are aimed at increasing safety and understanding, then they should be considered a hate group, and thereby, be revoked of all funding from the Student Association at The George Washington University.
