SDSU frat defends itself, says dildo-waving claim exaggerated by activists
A Delta Sigma Phi student leader at San Diego State University said accusations that members of his fraternity maliciously waved dildos at a group of sexual assault protesters have been widely exaggerated.
Yet the claims have done their damage, the student said, pointing out in an interview with The College Fix that the Delta Sig chapter at San Diego State has been shut down and its members personally defamed across the globe.
“They feel the ends justify the means,” 22-year-old Brenden Boesgaard said of the sexual assault activists. Boesgaard is a senior and business major at San Diego State, a U.S. Marine Corps reservist, and Delta Sigma Phi’s new member educator.
The protestors told news outlets they were taunted with sex toys as they walked fraternity row during a Take Back the Night rally Nov. 21. The story went viral. Many headlines on the incident described groups of fraternity men yelling obscenities and waving dildos at protestors. Several Internet reports labeled the fraternity members stupid idiots, with the UK’s Independent even declaring “World’s worst humans wave dildos at anti-rape protesters.”
One of the student protestors who led the march, Jordan Busse, told KPBS that she has “been to about three demonstrations before, this is the first time where I’ve actually felt scared.”
As reported at the time by The College Fix, no videos or photos substantiating any of these claims have surfaced. Neither the fraternity members nor marchers were able to corroborate their side of the story. Nevertheless, Delta Sigma Phi has been disbanded for at least a year and a half. Campus leaders cited alcohol-related and hazing incidents among its reasons.
