The word ‘diversity’ is no longer inclusive enough or something.

‘Diversity’ becomes a bad word for Northwestern student government

First abortion-rights advocates drop “pro-choice” and now a student government wants to junk “diversity”? This has been an interesting year for unfavored euphemisms.

Northwestern University’s student government is considering dropping the word “diversity” from its Diversity and Inclusion Committee, and replacing it with “accessibility,” the Daily Northwesterner reports:

Austin Romero, vice president of diversity and inclusion, proposed during the quarter’s first Senate on Wednesday to change his committee’s name because accessibility is a more feasible and defined goal than diversity, he said.

“I think it’s really difficult to act directly on diversity, trying to make the community more diverse,” the SESP senior said. “We need to make sure the Northwestern community is inclusive and most importantly accessible to all students, and in that way we can make sure the campus has a better chance of becoming more diverse.”

We have to get rid of diversity to save it!

“That’s not saying that I don’t value diversity or that I don’t want to continue fostering it, because that’s absolutely what I want to do,” Romero told The Daily. “I would say that’s even the ultimate goal.”

Won’t people think “accessibility” refers to things like wider hallways and special screen readers for computer monitors? Because that’s not even close to what the committee is considering: subsidized theater tickets and student leader training for “different issues of identity,” like LGBT issues.
