‘Save our Slice’: 13 Va. colleges fight higher education budget cuts
Thirteen Virginia colleges and universities have united to relay an important message to Governor McAuliffe: Don’t cut money from higher education budgets.
The effort began as a response to McAuliffe’s plan to bridge a $2.4 billion revenue gap in Virginia over the next three years, resulting in $346 million being cut from this fiscal year’s budget and $536 million in fiscal year ’16.
Higher education is expected to take a hit of at least $90 million over the next two years.
The student body presidents of 13 Virginia universities — including George Mason University, James Madison University and University of Virginia — joined together through the advocacy organization Virginia21 to fight the cuts. VA21’s mission is to “educate the leaders of tomorrow by showing them how to make a difference today,” which was exemplified through their video to the governor.
