A San Diego State University student plunged to her death after responding to a dare.

Sadly, this tragedy comes hard on the heels of the meningitis-caused death of Sara Stelzer, who belonged to the same sorority.

A San Diego State University student died Friday morning after she fell from the roof of a five-story building near the campus, according to San Diego police.

The fall in the 5500 block of Lindo Paseo — in the College West area — was reported just before 4 a.m., said San Diego police Officer Frank Cali.

Police said the victim, identified as 19-year-old sophomore Melissa Kennon, was with a man on the roof when she somehow made her way to the edge and fell five stories to the ground below. The man told police he tried to stop her from nearing the edge, but couldn’t.

Kevin Rampen told 10News Kennon wanted to be daring by climbing out onto the ledge. He said he asked her to get down but saw her fall.

“Literally [my] heart sank. I looked over, she just landed on the ground. I immediately called 911, rushed down to the floor and just talked to the operator … scariest thing I’ve ever seen,” Rampen said. “She was breathing. It was kind of not consistent, which was really concerning to me.”

Medics at the scene said Kennon was awake and breathing when she was taken to a nearby hospital.

She was initially listed in critical condition, but police said the young woman died just before 10 a.m.

…10News learned Kennon was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority. Sara Stelzer, who died of meningoccocal meningitis, was also a member of that sorority.
