Regis University accidentally sends bomb threat alert

DENVER – Regis University accidentally sent a “bomb threat” alert to people across the metro area even prompting Rangeview High School in Aurora to go on emergency lockdown.

“Regis does regret that the message went out and that Rangeview was impacted so heavily,” Cindy Matthews, spokesperson for Regis University, said. “However I wish to remind people not to use erroneous message as a reason to unsubscribe. The system worked.”

The system called RUalert will send subscribers a text message, email, and/or automated voice message if there is any emergency at Regis University. Matthews says at 7:40 am, a school official was testing the system.

“The safety manager wanted to demonstrate and have this template for a bomb threat go to his cell phone, so he could illustrate from start to finish how the process works,” Matthews said. “Unfortunately, the wrong button was hit and instead of sending it to one phone, it went to over 6,000.”

Matthews says one subscriber works at Rangeview High School in Aurora and used the main office number of the school to receive emergency alerts. When Rangeview received the automated warning about a bomb threat, the school went into immediate lock down.

Matthews says two minutes later a correction message was sent stating that the alert was an error. Still, Aurora Schools Spokesperson Patti Moon says the school followed protocol and kept the school on lock down for about 30 minutes while Aurora Police investigated the area and deemed it safe.
