Report campus anti-Semitism instantly with Simon Wiesenthal Center’s app

Harassed by boycott, divestment and sanctions activists? Frat house vandalized with swastikas? Look no further than a new app called CombatHateU from the Simon Wiesenthal Center.

Religion News Service reports that the app, created in association with the Jewish fraternity Alpha Epsilon Pi, isn’t intended to rat out people who disagree with Israeli policy:

The app “is someplace to go” for students who often don’t know what to do in the aftermath of an anti-Semitic incident, whether it’s verbal, graffiti or a physical assault, said Jon Pierce, spokesman and past president of AEPi. Although young people might not immediately think to call the Simon Wiesenthal Center, college administrators or the police, the app will be right there on their phones, he said. …

[Center Associate Dean Abraham] Cooper and Pierce said the app is not designed to go after peaceful protesters of Israeli policy, but to flag violent or incendiary speech. “We’re not the thought police about the Middle East,” Cooper said.

The app asks users when and where the incident happened, and whether faculty, administration, campus police, media, Hillel or other groups have been notified, the article says. They can also attach photos and video.

When a student hits “report it,” the report is sent to the Wiesenthal Center “for evaluation.” They can also share it on social media.
