San Diego State Student Dies of Meningitis

San Diego State student suffering from probable meningitis passes away
An 18-year-old San Diego State University freshman student who was critically ill with meningococcal meningitis, a bacterial form of meningitis, passed away Thursday, family members told 10News.
The young woman, 18-year-old Sara Stelzer, was previously healthy and had been vaccinated for meningitis, although she may have come down with a different strain. She had flu-like symptoms on Sunday, Oct. 12, and by Tuesday was at Kaiser Foundation Hospital in Grantville on life support.
Stelzer recently graduated from Moorpark High School in Moorpark, Calif., and began her studies at San Diego State University in late August.
Word of her death spread like wildfire across the SDSU campus and students, friends and family immediately took to Twitter.
Emily Claudy tweeted, “It doesn’t feel real to lose such a vibrant, beautiful person this fast. You always managed to brighten everyone’s day.”
Mitchka Saberi tweeted, “Such a cruel world. Can’t believe it.”
Messages of shock, sadness and condolences for the young woman’s family also poured in to the 10News Facebook page Thursday evening.
