St Thomas Aquinas College Exchange Student Apprehended for Making an Online Threat of a Massacre

An exchange student at St. Thomas Aquinas College (STAC) threatened a massacre at the school via social media, but police believe they put an end to the matter.

According to the Westchester County Journal News, Inigo Aldecoa-Tapia, 20, was taken into custody Monday and charged with making a terroristic threat. The Orangetown Police believe his threat was not ready to come to fruition.

Detective Lt. James Brown only told the newspaper Aldecoa-Tapia’s threat was made over a social media medium, but he would not say which site it was. Students confirmed it was Yik-Yak, a website that has already been cited in a number of other online threats.

“A lot of students are using it,” Brett Walker, a freshman at STAC, told the Journal News.

The newspaper also indicated that he and other students did not feel like they were in danger and that the authorities handled the situation swiftly and effectively.

“Honestly, it probably was a joke,” Walker said. “You can’t take chances with anything like that.”

Aldecoa-Tapia, originally from Spain and a member of the STAC tennis team, is being held at the Rockland County Jail on $10,000 bond. As of Tuesday he remained in jail and police found no weapons in his possession.

Police learned of the threat Sunday night and arrested Aldecoa-Tapia Monday around 11 a.m., while the police utilized bomb-sniffing dogs to secure various buildings on campus. The dogs came from the Rockland County Sherriff’s Office, whose Computer Crimes Task Force is also assisting in the investigation.
