University of Florida to launch Islamic study center
The University of Florida is launching a center for global Islamic studies.
The Gainesville Sun reports that the center has already been approved by university officials and will be announced when UF’s Board of Trustees meet this week.
Officials in the school’s Center for African Studies and the Department of Religion have been working to open the center for a year. They have brought together a cross-section of faculty from religion, science, history, anthropology, languages, literatures and cultures.
The center is set to launch Sept. 18-19 with a conference on “Global Islam and the Quest for Public Space.”

Most Islamic studies programs seem nothing more than Islamic propaganda centers. To be a true academic discipline, it needs to have varying viewpoints. Will there be Jewish or Israeli professors? Will there be courses critical of Islam, or of Arab countries? Will a pro-Israeli view of the conflict in the ME be taught?
BTW, how hany Jewish profs are part of ME Stidies centers around the US! Even in prestigious colleges? I bet very few.
Didn’t this university have that Arab professor who was jailed on terrorism related charges? Not exactly the best place to have this kind of thing. More than that, any Islamic studies center is going to be flooded with Islamic money intended to preempt any open discussion and critical analysis of Islam. Why waste money on it? We need a center against Islam and the terrorism it generates. That’s more useful.
