Off-campus surveillance cameras proposed by University of Illinois
CHAMPAIGN – Champaign city council members are considering a proposal that would allow the University of Illinois to expand its network of surveillance cameras off campus and onto city streets.
The university suggests phasing in off-campus cameras, starting with a control box at Sixth and John streets. The control box could later connect cameras along Green Street.
Should the proposal be approved, it would be the first time the university has put security cameras on property it doesn’t own.
According to university Police Chief Jeff Christensen, his department and city law enforcement would benefit from the addition of more cameras.
