Most Americans would be up for anything that might help our veterans. Too bad this study got axed.

University drops professor heading medical marijuana research to help veterans

A professor researching medical marijuana as a possible treatment for veterans struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder has been let go by the University of Arizona (UA).

Dr. Sue Sisley, a clinical assistant professor at the UA College of Medicine Phoenix, wanted to measure the effects of cannabis for veterans suffering from PTSD—the first and only study of its kind in the country.

Sisley, who also has a full-time telemedicine practice with her mother, has become politically active on the issue, speaking on how the proposed treatment could help veterans. She had permission to conduct her ground-breaking research from the Food and Drug Administration as well as the U.S. Public Health Service.

Before the study could start, she was informed by the university this week that her contract would not be renewed, and the decision was final and not up for review. Her last day will be on September 26th.

“We were right on the cusp of being able to implement this research and the UA just cut it off at the knees and hurt the veteran community in Arizona more than they’ll ever realize,” Sisley said.

Taking the research project to another university would require her to go through a new review process, putting the study on hold for possibly another year.
