Bomb scare shuts down Louisiana university campus

One of Louisiana’s largest universities told students to stay in on-campus apartments or go home after police found a suspicious device in a nearby park and were checking on another item found in a campus parking garage.

Lafayette police spokesman Kyle Soriez says someone called police about 5:35 a.m., saying a bomb had been placed at Girard Park, which sits next to the sprawling, 1,500-acre university campus.

State Trooper Brooks David (dah-VEED) says the bomb squad was neutralizing the first device, which was found in a trash can. He didn’t have a description of it. He called the item in the parking garage “a possible second device.”

University of Louisiana at Lafayette spokeswoman Kathleen Thames says morning summer school and freshman orientation sessions were canceled. About 5,500 students are enrolled in summer school and 400 freshmen were coming for orientation.
