Not all students at Rutgers were against Rice speaking and they’re angry about the environment created by the protesters.

Rutgers Students Protest ‘Hostile’ Atmosphere Created By Rice Controversy

Students at Rutgers University have expressed some righteous indignation at the small minority of students whose outrageous claims prompted one of the most respected and accomplished women in the world today – Condoleezza Rice – to kindly back out of serving as commencement speaker.

The upset students represent many groups on campus: College Republicans, those in the Greek system, and members of the Eagleton Undergraduate Associates. They wrote a letter to the campus president asking him to denounce the protesters’ claims and actions.

NJ.com reports the students say the situation created a “hostile campus environment” –

“An (overwhelming) number of the students were disappointed in Condoleezza Rice no longer being the commencement speaker after a small minority of the student body and intolerant faculty members at Rutgers University protested loudly over the past month,” Donald Coughlan, a Rutgers student and chairman of the New Jersey College Republicans, wrote on behalf of the groups.

The letter also said some students were disturbed by emails sent by faculty members encouraging them to attend a “teach-in” about Rice Tuesday and speak out against the former U.S. Secretary of State.

“Most students know these professors very well and these emails intimidated students who do not share the opinions of the professors,” Coughlan wrote.
