Rutgers Student Government Votes to OK Condi Rice as Grad Speaker
We recently told you that some faculty members at Rutgers were objecting to the choice of Condoleezza Rice as commencement speaker. Now the student government has voted and the objectors lost.
The College Fix reports.
In Narrow Vote, Rutgers Student Government OKs Condi Rice As Grad Speaker
In a close vote preceded by plenty of Condoleezza Rice bashing, the student government at Rutgers University has agreed to support the selection of the former Secretary of State as this year’s commencement speaker.
Some professors and students have decried the selection, saying Rice condoned torture, such as waterboarding, and misled Americans about the reasons for invading Iraq. But in a vote of 25 to 17, student government members late last week decided not to reject her as this year’s commencement honoree.
The decision came after heated debate among the campus’ student leaders. But perhaps the best line of the night goes to senior Deepta Janardhan, who “explained how any political leader that the university invites as commencement speaker would fail to have the full support of everyone,” the Daily Targum reports:
“If Rutgers were to rescind Rice’s invitation, the university would be remembered as the school that chose to invite Snooki to speak at an event, but revoke Rice’s.”
