A sorority at the University of Connecticut has taken the “gender equality” ideal a little too seriously.

It now faces suspension for its hazing rituals, which is usually the punishment ladled out to fraternities.

University of Connecticut has temporarily suspended the Delta Zeta sorority chapter following hazing allegations.

The sorority allegedly hazed members of an unidentified fraternity March 7, at the Mansfield Apartments. They forced male students to wear thongs, drink alcohol off each other’s bodies, consume dog treats and paint their bodies among others.

As a result of the suspension the chapter cannot organize or take part in any Greek activities pending outcome of an internal investigation.

Kimberly Hill, the UConn associate director of community standards, said that a suspension “indicates that the presence of your organization on campus could pose a threat to the health and safety of the campus community,” USA Today reports.

If sorority members violate suspension rules or threaten the person who filed the complaint, they will face serious action, wfsb reports.

“The sorority does not condone hazing and is committed to its eradication. These alleged actions are an embarrassment and disappointment not only to Delta Zeta Sorority but to the entire Greek community. ….we look forward to fully resolving this in a cooperative manner,” Jeanine P. Triplett, the National President of Delta Zeta said in a statement.

Reacting to the hazing allegations, Joe Parker, a UConn junior said, “I’m not sure I would. That’s pushing the limits.”

“There’s definitely been some hazing incidents that have been inappropriate,” said Taylor Sullivan, a senior. “But something like that, where no one is being physically harmed, I wouldn’t say there’s anything wrong with that.”

Delta Zeta sorority chapter is the third Greek organization at the Connecticut school to face suspension orders over hazing allegations in the last two months. Tom Breen, a university spokesman, said that the university authorities suspended sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma and fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon March 6, pending an ongoing investigation, NY Daily News reports.
