Signs of spring abound: The clocks are moved forward, the country is thawing from the “Polar Vortex”, and institutions of higher learning are announcing tuition hikes!

Yale University says that it is increasing prices by 4 percent.

And, as an extra bonus for Young Americans railing against the “1 percenters”, the increase exceeds the benchmark U.S. inflation measure.

Yale University’s undergraduate tuition, room and board will rise a combined 4 percent to $59,800 in the 2014-2015 academic year, the same percent increase as a year earlier.

Tuition will rise to $45,800, up from $44,000 in the current academic year, and room and board will increase to $14,000, up from $13,500, the Ivy League school in New Haven, Connecticut, said in a statement. Students pay other costs not billed by the school, including transportation and books.

Yale’s cost increase exceeds the benchmark U.S. inflation measure. The consumer price index rose 1.5 percent in the 12 months ended December, according to the U.S. Labor Department, down from a 1.7 percent increase in 2012.

In this academic year, 52 percent of undergraduate students received financial aid, down from 55 percent last year. This year’s average grant is $41,000, according to the statement.
